The History of the Customs House
The Customs House is one of the oldest buildings in Kerteminde. It was built by around 1590 by Niels Bager, a merchant from Odense, when Kerteminde served as a port city for Odense.Toldboden er én af de ældste bygninger i Kerteminde. Den blev opført af Odense-købmanden Niels Bager omkring år 1590, da Kerteminde fungerede som havneby for Odense. When the Danish-Dutch fleet set out to retake the town, the building was blown to smithereens and not rebuilt until 1735, which we can see from the date on the façade. Until 1800, it was the only brick-built secular building in Kerteminde.
From 1848 to 1970, the building was what its current name indicates: the Customs House. Today, the Customs House is used as an exhibition venue for Museums of Eastern Funen and Kerteminde Art Association.
